چکیده

Bergmann’s rule, which proposes a heat-balance explanation for the observed latitudinal gradient of increasing animal body size with increasing latitude, has dominated the study of geographic patterns in animal size since it was first proposed in 1847. Several critical reviews have determined that as many as half of the species examined do not fit the predictions of Bergmann’s rule. We have proposed an alternative hypothesis for geographic variation in body size based on food availability, as regulated by the net primary production (NPP) of plants, specifically NPP during the growing season, or eNPP (ecologically and evolutionarily relevant NPP). Our hypothesis, ‘‘the eNPP rule,’’ is independent of latitude and predicts both spatial and temporal variation in body size, as well as in total population biomass, population growth rates, individual health, and life history traits of animals, including humans, wherever eNPP varies across appropriate scales of space or time. In the context of a revised interpretation of the global patterns of NPP and eNPP, we predict contrasting latitudinal correlations with body size in three distinct latitudinal zones. The eNPP rule explains bodysize patterns that are consistent with Bergmann’s rule, as well as two distinct types of contradictions of Bergmann’s rule: the lack of latitudinal patterns within the tropics, and the decline in body size above approximately 608 latitude. Both types of contradictions of Bergmann’s rule are consistent with the eNPP rule, as are a wide range of other phenomena.

Bergmann’s rule and the mammal fauna of northern North America

The observation that ‘‘on the whole. . . larger species live farther north and the smaller ones farther south’’ was first published by Carl Bergmann in 1847. However, why animal body mass might show such spatial variation, and indeed whether it is a general feature of animal assemblages, is currently unclear. We discuss reasons for this uncertainty, and use our conclusions to direct an analysis...

On the validity of Bergmann’s rule

Aim We reviewed the occurrence of Bergmann’s rule in birds (ninety-four species) and mammals (149 species), using only studies where statistical significance of the results was tested. We also tested whether studies using different characters as surrogates of body size have a different tendency to conform to Bergmann’s rule, whether body size and nest type (in birds) have an influence on the te...

Bergmann’s Clines in Ectotherms: Illustrating a Life-History Perspective with Sceloporine Lizards

The generality and causes of Bergmann’s rule have been debated vigorously in the last few years, but Bergmann’s clines are rarely explained in the context of life-history theory. We used both traditional and phylogenetic comparative analyses to explore the causes of latitudinal and thermal clines in the body size of the eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus). The proximate mechanism for la...

Bergmanns rule in mammals: a cross-species interspecific pattern

Although Bergmann’s rule – stating that among closely related species, the bigger ones will inhabit the colder climates/higher latitudes – was formulated for inter-specific comparisons, most analyses that tested this pattern in mammals were on an intra-specific level. To date, no large-scale taxonomydriven cross-species evaluation of the pattern predicted by Bergmann exists. Here we show, in a ...
